Application of the Technology in Tanzania
Tanzania holds massive wind energy potential, with an estimated total onshore capacity of 789 GW (and up to 232 GW near transmission lines). The nation aims to reach 1,150 MW of installed wind power capacity by 2038. Across the country, wind speeds vary from 0.7 to 19.8 m/s at 100m heights, presenting distinct regional opportunities:
Central Regions (Singida & Dodoma): East Africa’s top wind corridor (9.2–9.4 m/s), hosting major 100 MW to 300 MW wind projects.
Southern Highlands (Iringa & Njombe): High-potential zone (8.9 m/s) with Tanzania’s first operational 2.4 MW hybrid wind farm.
Zanzibar & Lake Regions: Steady wind speeds (5.4–5.8 m/s), ideal for small to medium-scale power setups.
Coastal Belts (Mtwara & Tanga): Heavy sea breezes with volatile wind gusts requiring high-strength structural turbines.
